The GenX Cinema series presents a double feature celebrating 1980’s coming of age classics, with “Breakfast Club” and “16 Candles,” screening on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 pm at the Soper Reese Theatre in Lakeport. Entry is by donation. No host beer bar will be open; additional refreshments will be on sale at the concession stand including popcorn and candy. The “Breakfast Club” is considered by most critics to be the best of the “Brat Pack” films. A seminal comedy/drama that is loved and appreciated by those of us who came of age in the 1980s, the movie doesn’t just remember what it’s like to be a teenager, it embodies the experience. Standout performances are delivered by the entire cast, including Molly Ringwald as the princess, Emilio Estevez as the jock, Judd Nelson as the criminal, Anthony Michael Hall as the brain, and Ally Sheedy as the basket case. “16 Candles” is more mature than the teen raunch comedies that defined the era and director/writer John Hughes shoots his film with compassion and clear respect for his characters and their hang-ups. The film stars Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall and Michael Schoeffling. Ringwald is particularly likeable in this story and was actually only 16 herself at the time of shooting. Her part was written expressly for her by Hughes. “Breakfast Club” was made in 1985, is rated R, with run time of 1 hour 37 minutes. “16 Candles” was made in 1984, is rated PG, with run time of 1 hour, 33 minutes. The films are jointly presented by the Lake County Theatre Company and the Soper Reese Theatre. The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, soperreesetheatre.com.
