The last of a four part contemporary chamber music series produced by Beth Aiken and Jeff Ives takes place at the Soper Reese Theatre on Sunday, April 23, at 3:00 pm, with a program featuring Bay Area wind trio, Trois Bois. This concert features the leading French composers of the 20th century. Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, and George Auric were members of Les Six, six composers who were the avant-garde of their time. Their music, considered by some as a reaction to Impressionism, recalls the music of the dance halls and bars that the young composers frequented. Not unexpectedly, their music is lively, spirited, and often humorous. Jean Françaix, younger than the other composers on this program, can be said to follow in the steps of Ravel, although his music is filled with as much spirit and humor as the music of Les Six. The music of these four select composers captures the beauty of the French countryside and the joy of French city life. The Trois Bois trio specializes in the rich oboe, clarinet and bassoon repertoire of the 20th century. The group formed in 2009, although the artists had previously collaborated in many concerts over the past decade. Its mission is to share a love of music for winds with others through concerts in venues both standard and new. The series is presented under the auspices of the Soper Reese Theatre with generous support from Anne Barquist. All seats are reserved. Tickets are $20 and $15. Children 18 and under are free. To purchase tickets go to SoperReeseTheatre.com. Tickets also available at The Travel Center, 1265 S. Main, Lakeport, Monday-Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
