Abundant Land: Soil, Seeds and Sovereignty comes to Kelseyville. Community leaders at Lake County Thrive are hosting a screening of the new environmental documentary Abundant Land featuring Native Hawaiian Rights leader, Walter Ritte, Environmental activist, Vandana Shiva and Permaculture instructor, Geoff Lawton. The screening will take place at The Unitarian Universalist Church on Friday, April 13 at 6 pm. The film’s director, Natasha Florentino, will be present for a Q&A following the screening. Abundant Land follows a group of Hawaiian residents on the island of Moloka’i as they oppose the biotech industry's use of their land to test genetically engineered seeds, and work to restore an integrated food system based on ancient Hawaiian farming practices and permaculture. Agrochemical biotech corporations, including Monsanto, are depleting Moloka’i’s topsoil and fresh water while contributing to dust storms that spread pesticides into the ocean and surrounding communities. Abundant Land offers a historical look at the intrusion and political underpinnings of chemical-intensive farming in Hawaii while portraying the rich legacy of traditional Hawaiian land management and farming self-sufficiency.
