The 1956 seafaring adventure, “Moby Dick” starring Gregory Peck, Richard Basehart and Leo Genn, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday, May 22, at 1:00 and 6:00 pm. Entry to the film is by donation. This MGM film adaptation of Herman Melville’s 1851 great American novel relates a hair raising story told by the sole survivor of a lost whaling ship about his captain's self-destructive obsession to hunt down an elusive white whale. In a one shot cameo, Orson Welles delivers the famous sermon, warning those who challenge the sea that they are in danger of losing their souls. Shot in black and white, it’s a brilliant Wellesian scene that sets the mood for the coming disaster. Directed by John Huston with script by Ray Bradbury. The movie is sponsored by Diane Plante and by the Lakeport Yacht Club. Rated G. Run time is 1 hour and 56 minutes. The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, soperreesetheatre.com.
