Frank Capra’s 1939 comedy, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” starring James Stewart and Jean Arthur, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre in Lakeport on Tuesday, November 8, at 1:00 and 6:00 pm. Stewart is a most happy choice for the title role, delivering sincerity to a difficult part that introduces him as a self-conscious idealist and a stalwart fighter bent on overcoming the political machine of his own state. Jean Arthur is the cynical Washington secretary who, in spite of herself, falls for the backwoods charmer and comes to his aid when he delivers that famous Senate floor filibuster. The movie is sponsored by Sarah Jansen. Not rated, B&W, with run time of 2 hours 9 minutes. Entry to the film is by donation. The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, soperreesetheatre.com.
