The 1936 romantic drama, “San Francisco” starring Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday, July 25, at 1:00 and 6:00 pm. Entry to the film is by donation. One of MGM’s biggest box office hits, “San Francisco” features Gable as a rakish, but likeable political boss who falls in love with Mary Blake (MacDonald), the singer at his rowdy gambling house. The local priest (Tracy) has better things in mind for Mary, giving her the opportunity to sing with the San Francisco Opera. The film is particularly famous for its convincing special effects which re-enact the devastating 1906 earthquake, including entire sets hoisted on hydraulic lifts and rockers and shaken apart. One reviewer calls the film “a big, brawling, boisterous, sentimental, touching, inspiring, thoroughly entertaining motion picture.” And the icing on the cake is MacDonald’s rendition of the endearing and enduring title song. The movie is sponsored by Classic Film Fans. Not rated, in black and white, with run time of 1 hour 55 minutes. The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, soperreesetheatre.com.
