Description
Contemporary Chamber Music will take center stage at the Soper Reese Theatre on Sunday, April 10, at 3:00 pm. The last in a four part series produced by Beth Aiken and Jeff Ives, this concert features “SquarPeg,” a quartet which combines musical textures from a multitude of disciplines into the fascinating new sounds of the 21st century. All seats are reserved. Tickets are $20 and $15. Children 18 and under are free.
SquarPeg draws on the rhythms and melodic and harmonic structures of such diverse traditions as French musette, western popular song, Arabic maquam and American jazz, and presents the old wine of traditional themes in the new bottles of a decidedly non-traditional instrumentation.
The group is composed of Jill Petricca, Rahman Abdur, Ginny Ryder and Gregg Moore. Petricca is no stranger to rendering notes of living composers beginning with her father, Richard Stroud. She performs with the Eureka Symphony and conducts the Scotia Band. Abdur was six years old when he began studying the tabla in his native Bangladesh. He holds a doctorate in Ethnomusicology and studied in Japan. Ryder has played with the Boston, Denver and Pittsburg Symphonies and performed with George Burns, Bill Cosby, Manhattan Transfer and the Ice Capades. Moore served as composer/musical director for Footsbarn Theatre, Friends Roadshow, Flying Karamazov Brothers & the Dell Arte Company. During 30 years in Europe he was a founding member of the influential eclectic music ensemble Available Jelly.
